By dismantling UNC on senior night, Duke finished the season 17-0 at home.

Miles reminds Henson that UNC is still down by 30. (courtesy Lance King)

Shortly following Duke’s 82-50 decimation of North Carolina on Saturday, injured Tar Heel big man Ed Davis tweeted a single word: “Unreal.” Unfortunately for Ed, Roy Williams and the silenced legions of sissy blue, the game was very real. And it was beautiful.

Dan Shulman noted in the ESPN broadcast that the game was a 2 hour party for the Cameron Crazies. We had a lot to celebrate: senior night for Jon, Brian and Lance, a share of the ACC Championship, recruits watching in the stands, and so much more. There’s a lot to talk about, so let’s get started.

A Fond Farewell on Senior Night

I think a lot of people teared up as Jon Scheyer was introduced before the game. For four years, Jon has been a consummate leader at Duke. An uncommonly intelligent player, Jon always has his game under control and is able to make the right decision. The fact that he was recruited as a shooting guard and is now a finalist for the Cousy Award, which honors the nation’s best point guard, speaks for itself. Jon is an extension of the coaching staff, a true team captain, and should be an All-American this season. I love the guy and wish Duke could keep him forever.

Jon Scheyer closed out his career with a great game: 20 points and 7 assists, including this wraparound dime to Z. (courtesy AP)

On Saturday night, Jon made his statement for ACC Player of the Year, finishing with 20 points and 7 assists (all of the helpers came in the first half). When he came out in the final minutes, his parents were emotional, particularly his mother. They are fan favorites and come to nearly every game. After three years of home losses to UNC, I’m glad the team gave Jim and Laury something to cheer for.

Lance and Brian played fewer minutes than Jon—with 16 and 20 respectively—but each made his presence felt. Zoubek is making me so sad; his play in the second half of the season has been such an improvement over the rest of his career. He had 8 points and 13 boards, and even had a little Dream Shake and jump hook on the baseline. Lance contributed two points and six rebounds before fouling out with about six minutes left to a rousing “LT! LT!” chant from the student section. His tough D, which earned him a spot on the All-ACC defensive squad, was once again stellar (although, what UNC player did he really have to shut down?) Lance may have the regal tattoo, but both he and Zoubs were Kings of New Jersey Saturday night.

ACC Champs!

In our ACC preview of the Tar Heels, we figured that it would be a race between UNC and Duke for the regular season title. Well, we were right about Duke at least. The victory put us at 13-3 and tied with Maryland for another regular season championship, our 12th. Although it’s tough to share anything—especially with the insane Turtle nation—it’s always good to hang a deserved banner.

Once again, the three (All-ACC) S’s led Duke to victory; Nolan, Kyle and Jon scored 65 combined points. So essentially, K could have thrown them out there with two mannequins and they would’ve beat the defenseless Holes by 15. (Also, Duke could have gone scoreless in the second half and still won 53-50.) Nolan crossed so many people that I lost count. In the first half, he left Larry Drew cemented to the floor and drove for a thunderous dunk. Kyle had 19 in the first half alone and was beating UNC by himself for several minutes. The Big Three came to play, and UNC was left cowering on the bench.

Having three legitimate 20 point scorers is a luxury that could translate to more postseason success. And as Coach K has repeatedly stated, even at the expense of a certain Chronicle sportswriter, our stars are not tiring out—and their continued dominance proves it. Earth, Wind and Scheyer (copyright!) will lead us deep into March.

The Crazies respond to Roy's equation (UNC's Season=Haiti Earthquake) with a little humor. (Courtesy DukeBluePlanet.com)

Coach K>Roy

With UNC’s season becoming more disastrous every game—even more so than Haiti, per Roy—attentive basketball fans have started to doubt Williams’ ability as a strategist. The guy can definitely recruit and is a great salesman of the powder blue program. And he has one great system predicated upon speedy point guards and forwards who can get up and down the floor. But this year, UNC has neither of these things. And Roy simply hasn’t adjusted.

Nor he has been particularly supportive of his players in this difficult season, a point this blog has made several times. Coach K, on the other hand, is still one of the game’s best in-game coaches and motivators. Early in the first half against UNC, he ripped into the Plumlee brothers for a poor defensive effort. After replacing them with Z and Lance, Coach K turned and told Miles and Mason—’that’s how you get a rebound!’ When Miles returned to the floor, he made a fantastic defensive play, stealing the ball and advancing it to Scheyer in transition. K rewarded him with more playing time. Miles came through again late in the game, when he flushed Duke’s final two points off a perfect alley-oop pass from Nolan. He nearly tore the rim off on that one—see the pictures for evidence.

The thing to take away from this exchange—no matter how ordinary it seems—is the way K uses anger and frustration to motivate his players. Instead of throwing them under the bus as Roy does, Coach K rewards his players for improvement and celebrates it with them when they perform better. Miles had a lot to say on this point after the game: see the video from WRAL here.

The Future Meets the Present

Several recruits and committed players witnessed our embarrassment of UNC. In addition to 2010 commits Kyrie Irving and Josh Hairston, several players visited to get a better look at Duke’s program. ‘10 forward Michael Haynes, ‘11 wing Michael Gbinjie and ‘12 shooting guard Shabazz Muhammad took in the action from behind Duke’s bench. The latter two are both top 10 players in their classes, and Michael Haynes may be another option for next year along with JuCo recruit Carrick Felix. It’s too early to offer any judgments on our chances with Gbinjie or Muhammad, but Duke’s dominance surely made an impression.

Kyrie Irving, along with his St. Patrick’s classmate and Twitter stalwart blank908, had a great time in the first row. Irving and Hairston jumped up several times during exciting plays and cheered like mad. You can tell that these guys are itching to get to Duke next year and join this team. Kyrie had this to say after the game: “Hard to say goodbye…but I’ll be back in the summer…” We can’t wait to see what Irving, Hairston and Thornton bring to next year’s team, which has an opportunity to be one of Duke’s best in several years.

Tough Weekend for John Henson

John Henson was easily the best player on the floor for Carolina on Saturday night, finishing with 14 points on 5-10 shooting, including some improbable buckets in the post. However, Henson was the Crazies’ primary object of scorn, drawing catcalls like “Eat A Hamburger” and “Gumby! Gumby!” Nor did John improve his lot with his attitude; after dunking in the general vicinity of Miles Plumlee, Henson got a little too pumped up and talked trash while running back up the court. Perhaps he didn’t realize his team was still down by 30 points. Roy quickly pulled him out of the game and Henson was left looking like a sad version of Lil’ Twist from Young Money. (thanks to “bmorecity_bear” for the spot-on comparison).

Let's see that from another angle, John. (courtesy AP)

But the weekend got worse for Henson. His sister Amber, a top-5 recruit in the class of 2011, committed to Joanne P. McCallie and the Duke Women’s basketball program on Sunday. Amber had considered joining her brother in Chapel Hill, but Duke’s medical program was too attractive. (Yes! Academic superiority is paying off!) Henson conceded his ‘defeat’ in having Amber choose Duke on his already legendary Twitter. I don’t mind him coming to “dook” to watch his sister, but I hope Cameron is always hostile to him when he suits up.

John Henson promises to be one of North Carolina’s better players for the years that he stays in Chapel Hill. Hopefully his sister is just as talented and can lead Duke Women’s basketball to its elusive first national championship to go with the conference tourney title they won on Sunday. What a great few days for Duke fans, and what an awful stretch for Gumby.

Nearly every bench on West Campus was burned in celebration of Duke's first home victory over UNC in five years. (property of Crazie-Talk)

Onward!

With all the joy following this weekend, it might seem alluring to curl up and watch the game replay over and over again on ESPN360. But as the seniors vehemently said in post-game speeches, this season is far from over. Duke has the tools to accomplish a lot more this year—an ACC tournament title, a number one seed, and a run at the Final Four.

And for once, I am more optimistic in March than in January. I can’t wait to see how high this team can fly.

Crazie-Talk was present for some serious pyromaniacs on Saturday night as benches burned on West Campus. One guy even tried to climb up on one of them! We do not suggest that, even if it was hilarious to see his buddies pull him off (“No, man, that’s a huge fire, not a jungle gym.”)

Check C-T later this week for our review of the ACC Tournament! Go Duke, and may UNC always lose by 30+.

Here’s a little video from the end of the game. Enjoy.

Duke can make a statement to the nation tonight with a season sweep over UNC.

Jon Scheyer always seems to play well against the Tar Heels. We need another great shooting performance from Jonny on his senior night. (courtesy DukeBluePlanet.com)

Tonight is an opportunity. Duke can break a tie with Maryland for first place in the ACC and potentially grab the number 1 seed in the conference tournament. Jon Scheyer, Lance Thomas and Brian Zoubek can cap off their home careers with a victory. Coach K can move closer to 900 wins. Etc.

There are a million reasons why a win tonight is important for tangible and statistical reasons. But then there’s that creeping feeling, the weird tingle you get under your skin when the pale blue boys come out on Coach K Court. North Carolina has had our number for four years in Cameron. Last year, two of our most hated Tar Heels had their day: Ty Lawson sliced through our defense and Hansbrough completed the career sweep of Duke at Cameron. Regardless of Carolina’s record (16-14, 5-10 ACC, by the way) this game is outside of trends, ignorant of statistics. The bad guys will have swagger tonight, and they deserve to. It’s up to us to beat it out of them and leave them deflated and CBI-bound.

This game is personal for everyone involved. Last night Coach K urged the residents of K-Ville to bring two emotions to the game tonight: anger and fury. I, for one, will have no problem with that. With a few Red Bulls in me tonight, I can’t wait to scream all game, and hopefully burn benches all night.

Let’s do this for the seniors. Let’s win it and send Roy’s Boys back to Chapel Hill to hole up in their apartments. As Coach K said last night, we are all a family—the team, the coaches, the students, the University. Tonight we can remind the nation whose house this is.

Let’s Go Duke.

I’d like to take a few minutes to talk about Brian Zoubek.

"GET OUT OF MY PAINT!"-Brian Zoubek (courtesy of DukeBluePlanet.com)

As the season has progressed, those watching Duke Basketball have heard the three “S” names quite a bit. And with good reason: in Sunday’s hard-fought win against the Virginia Tech, Scheyer, Smith and Singler accounted for 63 of the 67 Blue Devil points. Spectacular, right?

This is delightful and frightening. At the same time. (Courtesy of DukeBluePlanet.com)

Equally spectacular, however, has been senior center Brian Zoubek’s play in the critical final stretch of ACC competition (and his beard). Against the Hokies, Zoubek’s performance on the boards were just as noticeable as Earth, Wind and Scheyer’s shooting. The Z-man grabbed 16 rebounds, eight of which were offensive. When Duke shot, the ball seemed destined for Zoubek’s outstretched paws, which are suddenly are sticky like that receiver in Little Giants.

Zoubek has stuffed the stat sheet in every imaginable way: he hustled for five steals in a road win over Miami, had a monstrous double-double against Maryland with 16 points and 17 rebounds, and shot 12-17 in the past three games. More importantly, Zoubek’s plays have come at critical junctures in the game. His three point play against Virginia Tech stands out; it gave Duke a five point lead after the under-8 minute official timeout (and accounted for three of the four points scored by Non-’S’ players).

I have some personal crow to eat as a former Brian Zoubek doubter. I’m sorry, big guy. After his 20+ point performance in the Blue-White game four years ago, many had Z pegged as the ‘next Mike Gminski.’ That never panned out. Injuries have plagued him. Fans have maligned him. And when the Plumlees came to town, I figured Bri-Guy had been replaced and relegated to the bench.

How wrong I was! Zoubek is this team’s glue guy (confirmed by Kyle Singler). He holds his ground without fouling, gets on the floor for loose balls, kicks out O-boards to open shooters, and lets out torrential yells that make opposing forwards look nervously toward their bench.

Crazies have recognized Zoubek with more than just "ZOOOO!" chants. (Courtesy of DukeBluePlanet.com)

Seth Greenberg said it best after another loss in Cameron: “He’s a mountain masquerading as a man. The guy is a huge human being.” I guess he was done calling people buffoons for the day.

I used to scream in anger at Zoubek on the TV. Now it’s all in delight, big fella. We have a mountain to climb on towards the Final Four, and a bearded one at that.

*     *     *

Duke returns to action tomorrow night against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Just the one? I guess they’re going for that singular mascot thing, like Stanford. Zoubek will face off with Jerome Jordan, Tulsas’ talented seven footer. But he’s not quite as mountainous as Brian.

Until then, enjoy DukeBluePlanet’s latest Top-5 plays from the win over Greenberg’s testy Virginia Tech team.

Revenge is a dish best served cold. And the Tar Heels of North Carolina got more than a full helping on Wednesday night in Chapel Hill.

Mason's dunk pumped new life into the Devils in the second half. Photo courtesy of Duke Blue Planet.

Heel Week concluded with a rivalry game even Brad Gilbert would call ‘ugly’. As expected, Carolina brought their best effort of the season, and as expected, the ‘good guys’ emerged from the Dean Dome victorious.

But the lowest scoring Duke-Carolina game in seven years wasn’t just another game. This was North Carolina. As much as Coach K and the players refused to let on before the game, this game meant a lot, for both sides. For UNC, it was a chance to revive their season. For Duke, it was an opportunity for sweet, sweet revenge.

Basketball, like every sport, is as much a mental game as it is physical. And it’s safe to say that for the past four years, UNC has just had Duke’s number. In the past nine meetings between the two teams, North Carolina had won seven – including three straight. Meanwhile, Duke’s last trip to the Final Four was in 2004. Since then, North Carolina has managed to make several trips to the promised land, winning the title twice in five years. And if Carolina’s success didn’t motivate Duke enough, Ole Roy certainly did when he literally stole Prince Harry from K in November of last year.

But that’s what makes the latest installment in the rivalry that much more enjoyable. With two of the individuals responsible for the aforementioned Carolina successes – Hansbrough and Barnes – looking on from behind the visitor’s bench, Duke took one giant step towards restoring balance to the greatest rivalry in sports with a victory.

Don’t get me wrong. A win over North Carolina this year does not mean that this team is destined for a Final Four run. Coach K has said it himself: this team is very good, but is definitely limited. The fact that Duke has reached 20 wins (for the 26th time in his tenure) this season is a testament to K himself.

With Coach pointing the way, the Devils executed perfectly down the stretch.

But Wednesday’s game had to mean a lot to this Duke team. Before this season, Jon Scheyer, Lance Thomas, Nolan Smith, and Kyle Singler had beaten Carolina once in their careers. And with one of the most hated players ever to wear Carolina blue and Heel destined to join him in that distinguished category, this win at the Dean Dome had to be special for Coach K.

While Deputy Dog has just about lost his mind trying to get through to his team, K’s Duke team played exactly as he preaches – poised and patient on the offensive end, strong and aggressive on the defensive end. His team showed resolve, staying focused and poised in the most hostile environment Duke will face all year. The gritty, defensive, and total team effort was all Coach could have hoped for. It was also, as Duke alum Seth Davis put it, the stake through the heart of Carolina’s “season from hell”.

Obviously, the most important part of the season still remains. But emotional wins can do wonders for the coaches, the players, and even the fans. I know I’ll never forget that rush of pure, unadulterated joy that came as my fellow Crazies erupted in Cameron in the waning seconds of the game.

You can be sure that those same Crazies will bring it when the Terrapins come to visit tomorrow. They know that a win over a tough Maryland squad will be delectable icing on Coach K’s 63rd birthday cake.

*     *     *

Crazie Talk Exclusive:

We were on scene as the Devils returned from Chapel Hill on Wednesday night. Enjoy.

With their respective campuses separated by only eight miles on Tobacco Road, Duke and North Carolina have engaged in the most passionate rivalry in college basketball for the better part of a century. On the eve of our first head-to-head battle of the new decade in Chapel Hill, we’d like to take the opportunity to revisit the the past five decades of Blue Devil basketball, Tar Heel basketball and the always heated Duke-Carolina Rivalry.

Two shades of blue, two very different programs. It's the greatest rivalry in sports.

1960’s

After winning a championship over Wilt Chamberlain’s Kansas team in 1957, North Carolina sustained its college basketball prominence under the guidance of Dean Smith, who would lead the Tar Heels for 36 years before retiring in the arena that bears his name. He guided the team to three Final Fours towards the end of the decade. Likewise, Duke’s rise in the 1960s came under the steady hand of Vic Bubas, who led the Blue Devils to three Final Fours in the decade before retiring in 1969.

Seeds of the heated rivalry were planted in 1961, when eventual national player of the year Art Heyman got into a brawl with Larry Brown (yes, that Larry Brown, the one who couldn’t win gold for USA in 2004).

Click here to view the embedded video.

1970’s

In those days, you had to win your conference tournament to make it to the NCAA tournament. As a result, the ’70s were lean years for Duke basketball. Forgotten, however, was the job done by Bill Foster, who resurrected the program after tough seasons in the early part of the decade. Led by Jim Spanarkel and Mike Gmiski (both of whom are now college basketball color analysts), the Blue Devils made it to the 1978 NCAA championship game where they lost to Kentucky. The Tar Heels continued to flourish under Dean Smith and his tactical brilliance, with 7 NCAA tournament appearances, 2 Final Fours and an NIT championship to boot. (Crazie Note to the 2009-10 Tar Heels: the NIT actually meant something back then.)

1980’s

Coach K, circa 1979. With K and Smith at the helms of their respective schools, the rivalry gained status as the greatest in all sports. Photo courtesy of Duke Libraries..

This decade saw the Tobacco Road rivalry reach unprecedented heights, as the hiring of one Michael William Krzyzewski ushered in 30 years and counting of stability for Duke basketball. Furthermore, the emergence of ESPN gave national attention to every clash between these two basketball giants. Dean Smith captured his first national championship in 1982, aided by the considerable talent on his team led by perhaps the greatest of all-time, Michael Jordan (maybe you’ve heard of him), and another NBA Hall of Famer James Worthy. However, they would not advance past the Elite Eight the rest of the decade.

Duke struggled in Coach K’s first three seasons, but 1984 saw its fortunes change as the Blue Devils defeated the #1-ranked Tar Heels, with Jordan, in the semifinals of the ACC tournament 77-75. The following year, led by Johnny Dawkins, Tommy Amaker and Mark Alarie, Duke went 37-3 and made it to the NCAA championship game before succumbing to Louisville. Duke then closed out the decade making three Final Fours in a row, culminating in a championship game appearance in 1990 against UNLV.

1990’s

Coach K and the 1992 squad became the first team to repeat as National Champions since UCLA in the 1970's.

Duke kicked off the decade with a bang, winning back-to-back titles in 1991 and 1992. Led by Bobby Hurley, Christian Laettner and Grant Hill, the Blue Devils were the class of the NCAA for two seasons. Not to be outdone, UNC won a second national championship under Smith the following year, with many thanks to Chris Webber for calling timeout in the national semifinal. Duke would return to the championship game in 1994, losing to Arkansas.

Dean Smith retired in 1997 as the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year. And thank God he did, because his successor, long-time assistant Bill Guthridge, had an absolutely loaded squad in 1998 and failed to win it all. You think Dean Smith wouldn’t have won a championship with Vince Carter and Antawn Jamison? Unfortunately, here in Durham we had our own mishaps with a supremely talented squad, as a team with four NBA first-round picks could not defeat Connecticut in the 1999 NCAA championship game.

The most memorable Duke-UNC game of the decade? February 28, 1998. Duke 77, UNC 75. A heavyweight battle between the #1 and #3 teams in the country saw freshman Elton Brand lead the Blue Devil rally from a 17-point second-half deficit. Brendan Haywood and “Easy” Ed Cota both missed the first of two free throws in the waning seconds with the Tar Heels down two.

2000’s

The Duke-Carolina rivalry works in cycles, and the 2000s were a perfect example of that. For the first half of the decade, Duke was nationally more successful than their UNC counterparts, winning a third national championship in 2001. The Tar Heels, on the other hand suffered a miserable season in 2002 under Matt Doherty, going 8-20 and missing postseason play completely.

However, led by Roy Williams, the Tar Heels won a championship in 2005 and 2009, and have the upper hand in the rivalry as they have won in Cameron for the past four years. Starting with a freshman Tyler Hansbrough ruining JJ Redick and Shelden Williams’ senior night, UNC has been far and away the better team for the latter half of this decade.

So, for the love of God and all that is holy, 2009-10 Blue Devils, please destroy the Tar Heels tomorrow as well as on March 6th. Harrison Barnes will be there as well; what better way to shove it in his face than to make this rivalry game a joke. Because we know the Tar Heels have been just that this season. CBI? Forget that, how about the CollegeInsider.com tournament?

Records aside, Wednesday night will be an emotional night. Both sides will be ready for the good fight.

Let’s go Duke. Go to Hell, Carolina, go to Hell.

Here at Crazie Talk, we always want to ensure our audience of the most unbiased commentary. Thus, we decided it’d be a good idea to interview(sort of) potential lottery pick social media connoisseur Ed Davis.

Ed Davis- basketball player by day, Roman history scholar by night (photo courtesy AP).

Here’s a small sample of questions Mr. Davis answered:

What’s your favorite nba team?

Ed: the nets they have been playing good lately

In your own words..whats really going on..? I don’t understand why we aren’t winning..we are more then capable.

Ed: they didnt build rome in one day

You say Rome wasn’t built in a day, do you think we’re at the Seven Kings phase of Roman History, the Roman Republican Era, or have we progressed into the Roman Imperial Era? Please at least tell me we haven’t reached the invasion and fragmentation period.

Ed: the hell is u talkin bout

But Davis isn’t the only one who’s taken to social media to express his thoughts lack of knowledge regarding Roman history. After the Heels gracefully bowed down to the mighty College of Charleston Cougars, this is what John Henson had to say:

Damn, John. Your own career isn't even relevant yet.

Henson isn’t the only one gracing the internets with his polished prose. Marcus Ginyard, Deon Thompson, Larry Drew, Will Graves, Justin Watts, Leslie McDonald, Dexter Strickland, and of course, Ed Davis, are also on Twitter. Amazing, isn’t it? (Crazie Note: there might be some inappropriate language on those pages. Just a warning.)

So guys, if you aren’t too busy with making other peoples’ lives relevant, feel free to answer these questions:

1) Ed, How does it feel to know that you could’ve left Carolina last year, with a ring and a lock to be a top-5 pick?

2) Dexter and Leslie, does John Henson looks more like Jeffrey the Giraffe, or Littlefoot?

Spirit Fingers!

3) Ed, how come “To Ed, With Love” doesn’t exist?

4) Ed, is your pillow as soft as your game?

5) Ed, say you were drafted by your dream team in last year’s draft, the Nets. Do you think it’s better to get paid while losing, or are you okay with not getting paid and losing? (Crazie Note #2: you’ll probably be seeing this sign in Cameron)

6) John, How does it feel to have made Andrew Goudelock relevant?

7) John, Has this UNC team also made losing relevant?

8 ) John, Atkins diet, or south beach? WHAT IS YOUR SECRET?

9) Marcus, are you gonna start next year? Oh wait…

10) Will, how was the vacation (a.k.a last season)? Did you get a chance to meet up with my boy Mike Phelps?

What's made Soulja Roy so successful over the years? Let's take a look.

So as much as we hate North Carolina, we have to admit that Roy Williams has had a lot of success in his time in Chapel Hell. But why? Most Heel fans will be the first to tell that they’ve won two titles in five years, but they have no idea what makes Ole Roy so successful. Let’s take a look at the top ten keys to Roy Williams’ success.

10. He loves Coke. Doesn’t everyone?

This legendary commercial just says it all.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Just makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside, doesn’t it? Even more fascinating was an interview with Yahoo! Sports earlier in the fall, where Roy admitted that he was, in fact, addicted to Coca-Cola.

I used to drink seven to 10 Cokes a day for 35 years. I’m still on the Coke products, but I drink Sprite Zero now because the sugar content of the Cokes is just too much for me. I went to the Mayo Clinic a few years ago to see about my vertigo, and they told me I needed to stop that other stuff. My triglycerides were through the roof, so they told me to cut back, and I ended up going on Lipitor also. Now I may have one Coke every two or three weeks. If I’m going to have a really good steak, I still love having a Coca-Cola Classic with that.

Steak and Coca-Cola Classic, huh? Stay classy, Chapel Hill.

9. He’s made the Nose Dome the best college basketball environment in the country.

WTF?! Photo courtesy of AP via Daylife.

This has been well-documented, but it’s just too funny not to list. Earlier this season, the Heels played Presbyterian at home. (Side note: that win is looking real good right now.) With six minutes to go in the second half, Deon Thompson was at the free throw line when a Presbyterian fan shouted ‘Hey Deon, don’t miss it!’ Of course, with the Dean Roy Dome deafeningly silent, this hardly obnoxious taunt (believe us, we know what obnoxious is) was heard by all, especially Ole’ Roy. He got into a brief shouting match with the fan, and then proceeded to have security escort the fan out of the stadium. After the blowout win, Roy had this to say:

“I don’t think anybody should yell anything negative at our players. Period. Let’s don’t make it a bigger thing than it is. But I just don’t think anybody should yell negative things toward our players (when) you come in on our tickets to watch our game.”

Freedom of speech? No thanks. Cheer for UNC, or out you go. Roy’s going to have a hell of a time in Cameron come March 6th.

8. He’s loyal to his players.

He’s so loyal to some of his players that he’ll play them over more productive pieces on his team. Case in point: Marcus Ginyard versus Dexter Strickland. Don’t get me wrong – I hate both of these guys – but Strickland is clearly the better player. Ginyard is a fifth year senior (!) but still struggles to fulfill his role as a “defensive stopper” and can’t shoot to save his life. In seven games of ACC play, Ginyard has played 26 minutes per contest, averaging 3.3 points, 3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists while shooting a whopping 22.8% from the floor. That’s garbage. From a fifth year senior? That’s just flat out terrible. Meanwhile, Strickland, meanwhile, has averaged 6.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists while playing only 17.2 minutes per contest. The numbers aren’t eye popping, but it’s pretty clear that Strickland is making the most of his minutes…while Ginyard is just taking up space on the floor. But Roy being Roy continues to maintain that Marcus “grades out better consistently” than Strickland or his fellow freshman, McDonald.

Roy drives a bus, and when he loses, he throws his players under it. Multiple times this season, Roy has singled out his freshmen, particularly Henson and Strickland, for poor play. But it doesn’t stop there. He’s even questioned the mental health of the player he’s defended the most. Here’s what he had to say about Ginyard:

“When he walks in a room, I smile. What greater statement can you make about somebody? But I get tired of worrying about a kid’s psyche. My god, play the dadgum game. That’s what it boils down to. I have been concerned about (his mental health). I’ve been greatly concerned about that. But you know what? I’m also tired of thinking about that. It’s time to play. So either play or don’t play.”

Sounds real supportive, doesn’t he?

7. His players are loyal to him.

In October of 2009, Lawson admitted to the Denver post that he should have left after his freshman year. The only reason he returned for his sophomore season was because he was “scared of being in the NBA”, and a DUI brought him back to school for his junior year. I’m sure that getting coached by Roy was the reason Tywon stayed in school.

Of course, Rashad McCants also enjoyed the two years he spent with Roy. Granted, his first year was the final year of the Doh regime, but McCants publicly compared Carolina to a prison. In 2003 – Roy’s first year at UNC – he sent McCants back to the locker room in the first half of a game against UNC-Wilmington after he thought Rashad was not cheering enough for their teammates.

6. He knows when to call timeouts.

No, Chris! No!

Timeouts are one of the most important tools a coach basketball has in his arsenal. UNC should be all too familiar with timeouts, as one very untimely one led them to the National Title in 1993. However, Roy is notorious for not knowing how the heck to use them. In one of my fondest non-Duke basketball memories – Kansas’ romp over UNC in the 2008 Final Four – the Heels were outscored by Bill Self’s Jayhawks 40-12 at one point in the first half. During this ridiculous run, how many timeouts do you think Roy called to get his team to calm down and focus?

Yeah. That’s right. One. He called one 30-second timeout during that 40-12 run, from which UNC never fully recovered.

This season, with as immature of a team as he’s ever had, Roy has also failed to grasp the importance of a timeout. In UNC’s nine losses to date, Williams has failed to use all five of his timeouts in eight of those contests (obviously without counting media timeouts). He used only 2 against Texas, 1 against Kentucky, and went without calling a timeout for the entire game in Syracuse’s beatdown of Carolina.

5. He’s one of the best tacticians in college basketball.

LOL at LDII being on the cover...of anything.

Speaking of losses, the thriller against the College of Charleston was exemplary in demonstrating Roy’s coaching prowess in late game situations. So much so that starting point guard Larry Drew II (hah!) had this to say after the game:

“We don’t really work on late game situations.”

Wow.

A member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and one of the media-proclaimed “best coaches” in college basketball doesn’t work on practicing critical junctures of a game? Are you kidding me?

But that’s not all. Roy runs a system that thrives off of running and scoring in transition. That’s all well and good. He’s had one system for years at Kansas, and implements the same at North Carolina. Last year’s version of Roy’s offense was almost unstoppable, and appropriately won the National Championship. Everyone knows the story from here: UNC lost 80% of its scoring and one of the best point guards in the country to the NBA in Tywon Lawson. His replacement was none other than the illustrious Larry Drew II – whose speed and handles pale in comparison. Nevertheless, Roy has tried to run and gun again this year. Without the personnel, it has failed miserably. Forget the horrendous 13-9 record. UNC averages 16.3 turnovers per game, which is good for 2nd most in the ACC.

Meanwhile, Roy spews nonsense to his players about how K runs one offensive system, which according to Dexter Strickland, changes his players. Obviously, Roy is one of the best tacticians in the game.

4. He’s calm, collected, and mature.

Who reads this stuff? Photo courtesy of Amazon.com

I’ll be honest here: even with loaded sarcasm, I had a lot of trouble typing the sentence above.

From the Presbyterian incident to the way he handles the media, it’s been well-established that Roy is somewhat of a thin-skinned, hypersensitive, and profane baby. Ever since he got to Carolina, he’s made his disdain for Coach K and Duke obvious. He’s publicly gone at it with K over injury reports before, without any sort of provocation. He’s negatively recruited Duke to almost every high schooler who’s ever considered playing for Duke, with the most obvious case being Prince Harry. Hell, he even made calls to Kyrie Irving when Duke was in heavy pursuit, even though Williams locked up his point guard of the future in Kendall Marshall months before.

But forget Duke. Like his former player, Roy likes to take potshots at anyone who he thinks has wronged him. In his book, Hard Work, Roy made it a point to voice his displeasure with current Michigan State sophomore Delvon Roe, who chose Tom Izzo and MSU over UNC in 2008.

3. He’s Ol’ Roy! Aw, shucks!

Have you heard the man talk? He’s a mountain goat man! The whole ‘dadgum’ routine is just so likeable, isn’t it?

After UNC fell to Virginia in the Nose Dome last Sunday, Roy teared up in frustration, at a loss to what has gone wrong with the team. Yes, he cried. Here are some of his words:

“How can you go any lower? Be honest: how can it be any worse than it is right now? Ol’ Roy’s been awfully lucky in his entire life and things have been very smooth, but right now they’re not. I’ve got to do a better job with my team than what I’m doing right now.”

Well, Roy, it did get worse. You lost to Virginia Tech at home after another late-game blunder, and will probably get got crushed by Maryland this afternoon. After that, you play Duke. So yeah, it did get a lot worse. But back the the main point: he cried. This dude won a National Title last year, and he cried (he cried!) after a conference loss to Virginia on January 31st. Aw, shucks, I feel so dadgum sorry for him! He’s so dadgum sincere that he refers to himself as Ol’ Roy! Dadgum it!

2. He develops talent.

Another juicy one. Heel fans claim Roy to be a great developer of talent. Heck, even Harrison Barnes claimed Roy to be a great developer of talent.

But let’s take a look at Roy’s track record in the past ten years. In 2000, he spurned North Carolina’s offer, opting instead to stay at Kansas. After Doh! made it clear that he was a terrible basketball coach, Ol’ Roy took the job from his former associate and inherited a three-man class sophomore of Felton, May, and McCants. He won the title in ‘05, got a beast of a class in ‘06, and somehow got all of his boys to stay in school and won again in ‘09. But did he develop those guys? Or did he recruit them? With the exception of Ty Lawson, who clearly got better every year (whether Roy had anything to do with it or not), I can’t think of one Carolina player who progressed in their years under Roy. Whether we like it or not, Hansbrough was a stud from day one. Ellington never learned how to do anything other than shoot. Ginyard still can’t do anything on the court. Thompson has been average, at best, for his entire career. And if you needed any more evidence, just look to the plethora of talent on the 2009-2010 UNC roster. Oh yes, Roy is quite the developer of talent.

1. He doesn’t give a s*** about North Carolina.

All nine of the aforementioned reasons are great, but none is better than this one. No more words are needed.

Welcome back to Heel Week, everybody! Yeehaw!

What a great day to be a Duke fan. Shortly after our Blue Devils punked the petulant Bumble Bees of Georgia Tech, Roy, um, led his Tar Heels to another loss, this time on the road in Blacksburg against Seth Greenberg’s Virginia Tech Hokies. I have never liked Greenberg so much.

While Greenberg celebrates a somewhat anticlimactic win, Roy had this to say: “I thought it was two teams that tried awfully hard.” Another gem from sophomore point guard Larry Drew:

Q: Does it get tiring hearing about opposing guards scoring 20 points on UNC?

Drew: “Yeah. Yeah, it gets old. But it’s up to us to stop that from happening.”

In light of Carolina’s string of defeats—that’s six of the last eight—here at Crazie-Talk we decided to take it easy on the men in sissy blue and focus on some of UNC’s former, more successful players. It was easy to hate these five players. Mostly because they were good (ok, there’s one exception.) All of them, despite their talent, ground on my conscience and made me want to throttle the television screen. They cry, whine, pound their chests, bleed, get ridiculous tattoos, take awkward jump shots…am I giving up too much?

Presenting the top five most hated Tar Heels of the past 10 years. (If you missed it, you can check out numbers six through ten here).

5. Marcus Ginyard (Guard, 2005-forever)

I know I said I wouldn’t pick on current UNC players in this top 5. But as Ginyard is essentially a dinosaur, aka fifth year senior, he has provided enough vitriol in his overlong stay at Chapel Hill for me to squeeze him into the top five.

No, no, Marcus. The 'crouching tiger' defensive posture only works when you're facing the offensive player.

The irony here is that I once respected Marcus Ginyard. He took a job in Chapel Hill delivering pizzas at one point, something I did not expect out of any college basketball player, let alone a Tar Heel. (I wonder how much he made in tips from them Carolina faithful?). Ginyard always seemed to fade into the background among his more talented teammates, particularly when in 08-09, when an injury forced him into a medical redshirt.

This past summer, however, Ginyard decided to take a more proactive role as a Tar Hole. With Hansbrough and Co. gone to the league, Marcus found himself the elder statesman of the Dean Dome, and thought he’d school the rookies in Karolina Klass.

Before basketball even started, Ginyard was positioning himself as a Cameron Crazie favorite. In an interview with WRAL, he revealed his true feelings on his rival down Tobacco Road.

“A lot of their players walk the line between a good, tough player and like a little shady, dirty…I have a strong dislike for most of the players who play at Duke.”

What you want, cookie?

Ginyard was not done, though. After Duke’s loss to Wisconsin in the ACC-Big 10 challenge, he tweeted this message: “Big 10 can have this challenge. Duke loses, we all win…” Big words from a man named “Number 1 cheerleader” during his UNC’s 2009 title run.

Side-note: while looking through Ginyard’s twitter, @MG1NYARD, I found this gem:

Way to look out for your own, Marcus.

4. Danny Green (Guard, 2005-2009)

One reason:

Maryland won that game.

Danny, did you learn your style from another former UNC moron?

There’s also the infamous incident at Cameron in 2008, when the Crazies donned baby blue ribbons in memory of UNC student body president Eve Carson, who had tragically passed away days earlier. After defeating Duke in Cameron, Green went out of his way to pop his jersey towards the crowd. Way to represent your school, Danny. Have fun bench warming for the Cavs, maybe LeBron will put him in one of his pre-game routines. That’s about all the attention you’re going to get.

3. Brendan Haywood (Center 1997-2001)

Where'd you get your...friends...Brendan? Brendan? You asleep big fella?

Ah, Haywood.

Brendan Haywood came to UNC in 1997. Like Kris Lang, he was a local yokel (Greensboro, NC) and earned a spot as a Burger Boy on the McDonald’s All-American team. At UNC, he averaged a respectable 10 points per game over his four year career. He blocked a lot of shots and set a few Tar Heel records. (Does that mean he gets his jersey in the rafters? No, can’t tell, too many worthless things up there).

It’s not Haywood’s game that drives me nuts. It’s his attitude. The guy complained about every call in college, flailing his arms around and screaming after the officials. Like Danny Green, he was a dancer. He would jump up and down after he got called for a foul, tapping his toes like Fred Astaire. I distinctly remember Brendan being named “College Hoops Biggest Crybaby” after his senior season. That same issue had Shane Battier on the cover. Haywood should have learned from Shane how to take it like a man.

What makes Haywood’s antics all the funnier is his recent call-out of LeBron James during the 2008 playoffs. Haywood plays for the Wizards, one of the worst franchises in sports, who had somehow managed to make it to the post-season. The Wizards employed “Hack-a-Lebron,” fouling James extremely hard to try to get him out of his rhythm. When James fought back in the media, Haywood had this to say:

Click here to view the embedded video.

I love Jay Mariotti’s response in that video: “Who is Brendan Haywood to talk about Lebron James like that?”

Like his number (and probably his UNC GPA), Haywood is a zero in the NBA. He has averaged a whopping 6 points over his career, and only gets burn because the Wizards literally have no better big men.

The irony of Haywood, the world’s biggest whiner in Tar Heel blue, calling out a superstar is stifling. Take a seat, Brendan. Or go back to Carolina, I’m sure an assistant coaching spot will open up for you soon.

2. Tyler Hansbrough (Forward, 2005-2009)

Wait, my socks are still on?

Hansbrough is a college basketball legend. He was a great player at North Carolina. OK. I said it.

Tyler Hansbrough will go down as the most polarizing player in ACC basketball history. (JJ Redick may be #2) He was devastatingly effective at playing basketball in the ugliest possible fashion.

"Photo grapher! Get me some more mousse!"

Unlike many of the previous players on this list, Hansbrough did not piss me off out due to his off the court antics. It was his incredible feats of awkward basketball that drove me out of my wits. I cannot deny his intensity, or his desire to win a championship. He was the face of college hoops for at least two years, and he set a good example by staying for four years.

But really, can you fault me for hating the guy? He created a new era in ACC officiating, drawing hundreds of undeserved fouls and traveling to his heart’s content. His stumbling monotone voice during interviews made me cringe. And when things didn’t go his way, he got all teary.

Since graduating from Carolina, Hansbrough has gotten some attention from the ad world. What was AT&T thinking? At least they didn’t let him talk, unlike the geniuses at Performance Acura. TEST WOW!!!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m extremely grateful Hansbrough finally moved on the NBA. Just don’t make me watch him flounder his way to the free throw line for the Pacers.

Oh, and he celebrates like a Jesus Lizard.

1. Rashad McCants (Guard, 2002-2005)

And the winner is…RASHAD!!!

McCants, before he got stole on by Lamar Odom.

Let me explain why Hansbrough is not number one. Hansbrough deserves my respect. Even if he plays the game like an angry kangaroo, he gets the job done.

On the other hand, I have absolutely no respect for Rashad McCants. He was an absolute punk during his three-year stay at UNC. I’ll admit my personal animus against Rashad here—he hails from Asheville just like I do. It’s sad that he represents my town.

The main thing that separates McCants from the rest of this list is simple: everyone hated him. He even gave his own fans a reason to resent him, comparing Chapel Hill to a prison: “You’re not allowed to say certain things, but once you get out of jail, you’re free. (I’m) in my sentence, and I’m doing my time.”

Why celebrate McCants? Why hang his jersey among the rafters with illustrious stars like Jordan and Worthy? I don’t understand it.

Since his “prison stay” at UNC, Rashad McCants played a few years with the Minnesota Timberwolves, and was recently traded to the Sacramento Kings, black hole of bad contracts. Apparently they didn’t want him, so they traded him to the Rockets. New beginnings? Not quite. The Rockets have dropped him, and now McCants has fallen off the face of the earth, along with his legendary website.

Rashad’s most notable achievement since leaving Chapel Hill Penitentiary was briefly dating MTV-star Khloe Kardashian. It didn’t pan out, though—she is now married to Lakers star Lamar Odom. I guess Kardashian wanted a guy with a steady job.

I’ll leave you with a sample of Rashad McCants’ bizarre poetry. It puts JJ’s to shame:

“Love Thief” by Rashad McCants

I’m not a Grinch that stole love but I’m a thief with no love.
Eyes bright like city lights when she enters my life.
Every morning after yawning we make love to sweet nothing and birds chirping.
My tongue lurking for that spot that says stop and makes ya mouth drop.
I’d spit you out just to taste you again.
And again I’d have this dream during the day where my eyes lay wide shut.
Love has culture shocked my brain and blindsided my heart,
my skin crawls with butterfly touches that tickle my smile.
Her eyes drown me in her deep blue sea. I openly swim naked in her fresh water.

So natural she smells like rain….

Poignant, Rashad.

*     *     *

Wait, I forgot someone.

Honorable Mention: Harrison Barnes (Forward – 2010 – ?)

This guy could one day end up at the top of this list. But he hasn’t stepped foot on campus as a student, so we’ll write him in as an honorable mention. In one of the most public recruiting battles between Duke and UNC in recent memory, Barnes led the Duke coaching staff to believe that he was theirs (for a long, long time), only to commit to Roy Williams via Skype on Friday, November 13th. Many of the student efforts designed to lure Barnes to Duke were organized by the Crazies who run this very site. Duke fans, coaches, and players were all, in essence, betrayed by Barnes & Ignoble, Backstabbers Inc. And it is for that reason that Harrison Bryce Jordan Barnes will be considered (by us, anyway) as one of the most hated Tar Heels ever.

As UNC throws their season away before our very eyes, we hope Harrison is wondering if he has made a huge mistake.

Welcome to Heel Week, everybody!

In the next seven days leading up to February 10—when Duke plays UNC in Chapel Hell—Crazie-Talk will be adding a daily post commemorating the many things we love about this rivalry, which we consider the best in American sports. The posts will range from comical (like today’s) to critical. But we’ll err on the comic side, because although this is UNC, we’re not sure how seriously to take Roy’s Boys this year.

Since we have a week and two big conference tests before the team bus rolls down 15-501 to the Dean Roy Dome, we’re starting off the week with a bit of acerbic humor. As young Duke fans (all born in the years before our first two titles), our collective memory centers on the past 10 years of the Duke-UNC rivalry. Many Tar Heels passed through the tutelage of Guthridge, Doherty and Roy Williams under our watch.

We have seen them all, respected few, and hated many. Here we’ll focus on the latter category: the Ten Heels We Love to Hate, all from the recently concluded decade (the 00’s? the oughts?)

10. Tywon Lawson (Point Guard, 2006-09)

Lawson with the then PotUS candidate. What does Obama have against Duke? First this, now Georgetown...

Lawson was an extremely frustrating player to watch, particularly as a Duke fan. By his junior season, his once speed-driven game had come full circle: he could shoot the three, make the right pass, and conduct his team with aplomb. I still think—and many Heels agree—that UNC would not have sniffed a title in 2009 save for Lawson. Say all you want about Tyler Hansbrough (and we will soon) but Lawson made UNC tick all the way to Detroit.

I respect Lawson’s game. And I’ve heard through reliable sources that he is a nice guy. But the entire situation of his return to UNC is maddening. After a June ‘08 misdemeanor for underage drinking, Lawson withdrew from the NBA draft and completed the UNC ‘dream roster’ along with Tyler, Wayne Ellington, etc. The irony is infuriating to a Duke fan: if Lawson had been smart enough not to drink and drive, he would have probably gone pro, leaving UNC with a gaping hole at point guard. After a minimal suspension at the start of the 08-09 season, Lawson tore through the ACC, winning league Player of the Year en route to a National Title.

Personal anecdote #1: in the final seconds of Lawson’s dismantling of Duke in Cameron, I watched as he flipped the ball over his head, looked directly at the Crazies, and scream “F*** You!” That’s what you call “Karolina Klass”.

Wow! Look at all those pro athletes! Vince Carter, Peppers...wait, who's that dude with the sign?

9. Makhtar N’Diaye (Forward, 1996-98)

I know, I know, N’Diaye didn’t play in the past 10 years—he was one of Bill Guthridge’s “six starters” on the 1998 team that miraculously lost to Utah in the Final Four. The rap on N’Diaye in his short stint at UNC, though, was extensive. He accused Maryland fans of yelling racial slurs, had to be restrained by Guthridge after fouling out of a game against Duke, and made obscene gestures during UNC’s second round game against Charlotte. The icing on the cake was his accusation of Utah player Ben Johnsen after losing to the Utes—N’Diaye again claimed racial slurs. (Johnsen on the other hand claimed that N’Diaye spat on him, which is entirely probable).

N’Diaye was a fool then, and he apparently hasn’t lost his knack for acting like a buffoon in front of millions of people. During UNC’s national title game against Michigan State last year, N’Diaye appeared on the coattails of his actually famous former teammates. The picture says it all.

I bet Roy was wondering, “Who is that guy? Who gave him Carolina tickets? Cheer for us or out you go!”

8. Kris Lang (Forward, 1998-2002)

My feelings for Kris Lang are a mixture of hatred, pity, and schadenfreude. Lang was the ubiquitous moron of ACC basketball: always on the floor, and always looking like a complete tool. He was the Matt Doherty era embodied—ugly, angry and horrible at basketball.

Um....Kris? The camera is still on.

A 1998 McDonald’s All-American, Lang was a local hero, hailing from Gastonia, N.C. He averaged 14 points in Carolina’s trainwreck 2001-02 season. I’m pretty sure all of those points came from his awkward jump hooks and flailing layups. Think Tyler Hansbrough. Except no skill, more complaining, and significantly more mouthguard. I always wondered if he and Neil Fingleton had ugly contests in the locker room. Maybe after losing to College of Charleston?

Personal Anecdote #2: Kris Lang once played for the Asheville Altitude, the short-lived NBDL team in my hometown Asheville, NC. One day the Altitude showed up at my school to run a basketball clinic. Lang was there, smiling like a moron and showing us fifth graders how to do jump hooks. Poor guy, I thought, what had he been reduced to?

7. Matt Doherty

To put it lightly, Matt Doherty was a disastrous coach. After Roy Williams turned down his alma mater in 2000, UNC Athletic director Dick Baddour hired the unproven Doherty. The first season went well: 26-7, number 1 seed, and second round exit. Oh, and National Coach of the Year. (???)

I thought D'oh! was Roy there for a second. Same feral posture! Same intensity! Hey, is that Orlando Melendez?

Then the ball dropped on Doherty. The next year brought a delightful 8-20 record, which most Tar Heels conveniently forget when bashing Duke for its “horrible” 22-11 campaign several years ago. Doherty was apparently a control freak: he fired legendary UNC point guard Phil Ford from the coaching staff. What, was he uncomfortable with having another former star on his staff?

Doherty also took a potshot at the Duke cheerleaders in his tenure. I guess he was working on that ‘competitive edge’ that landed him at 10-22 ACC record in his final two seasons at Carolina.

Although Doherty has ‘landed on his feet’ at Southern Methodist (where he has compiled a 33-58 record in three seasons) he will always be known as the guy who just didn’t come through at the helm of UNC. For Baddour’s sake, I’m glad Roy ‘gave a s***’ about North Carolina after all.

6. Sean May

Sean May just should have just stayed in Chapel Hill. He had it all: great teammates, a coach who loves him, cover of Sports Illustrated, unlimited brownies. Because once he left the friendly confines of North Carolina, his once promising career went spiraling down.

He does...about 12 times a night. Oh, and he's licking his lips for that last bit of Krispy Kreme. Om nom nom.

May likes to eat. And party. But mostly eat. He became so out of shape that Charlotte Bobcats coach Larry Brown deemed him physically unfit to play. That’s Larry Brown, former UNC player and coach, and Tar Heel apologist extraordinaire. Larry Brown told one of his own that he was too fat to play on his team. Now that’s not the Carolina Way!

Luckily for May, the Sacramento Kings had a spot at forward this past season after trading former Duke star Shelden Williams to the Celtics. May signed a one year deal for nearly a million dollars, contigent upon him passing his physical (aka lose enough weight to fit into his uniform).

Why do we pay professional athletes so much money if they need the Atkins diet as bad as the average middle aged mother? I guess we’ll just have to ask May.

So today is February 1st, which only means one thing: we’re only a month away from March. With no more undefeated teams standing, it’s time for a shake up in the Top 25. All four pollsters ranked their version of the top 25 teams in the country, awarding 1 point to the team ranked twenty-fifth, and 25 points to the team ranked first.

A few notes:

- In our preseason poll, Syracuse was in the ‘also receiving votes’ category with a whopping three points. Whoops.

- Also in our preseason poll, North Carolina was ranked ninth. How delightful.

- Others that dropped out: Connecticut, Dayton, and California.

- This dunk by Mason Plumlee was the highlight of my weekend.

"Jwoww!"

1. Kansas (99)

Sherron Collins earned himself a First-Team All-America spot with his performance against Kansas State. Dude has a sick crossover.

2. Syracuse (96)

The Orange have the best team in the best conference in the nation. To think they were unranked at the beginning of the season. Funny what a victory over UNC can do for you, isn’t it?

3. Villanova (93)

‘Nova has coasted through the competition thus far. Can the deepest backcourt in the country book Jay Wright a flight to his second straight Final Four?

4. Kentucky (88)

What a shame. UK didn’t get to wear their ‘badges of honor’ – which is what Cal called the No. 1 ranking – for very long. Too bad their fans can’t wear these anymore either.

5. Georgetown (81)

With their beatdown of Duke in front of the Commander In Chief, Georgetown vaults into the top five. Despite what Duke fans want to believe, this team is pretty damn good.

6. Michigan State (81)

Honestly, this team is way overrated. But we voted them as the No. 6 team in the country anyway. But one thing’s for sure: Tom Izzo gets his Spartans to play when it counts.

7. West Virginia (74)

WVU made a ridiculous comeback against Louisville, and Da’Sean Butler hit yet another game-winner. This team will be very dangerous in March.

8. Texas (70)

Rick Barnes has an absurdly talented 13-man rotation (Dexter Pittman is so beastly, he counts twice). Rick Barnes also has a team that lost to Baylor – at home. This team is fantastically enigmatic.

9. Purdue (69)

Somehow none of the top teams in the Big Ten seem like legitimate contenders, Purdue included. But Robbie Hummel is nice at ball.

10. Duke (60)

Eek. Road struggles continued in the nation’s capital. How this team reacts to being embarrassed by Georgetown will determine how deep this team can go in March.

11. Kansas State (59)

Frank Martin had KSU ready to play on Saturday. Despite the loss, the Wildcats should be a dark horse come tournament time. They can hang with (and beat) the big boys.

12. BYU (53)

Pat Forde thinks BYU can win it all. We don’t. No idea why we ranked them No. 12. Sidenote: I wish I was as creative as Pat Forde when it comes to coming up with corny names for columns.

13. Gonzaga (50)

The ‘Zags had quite a winning streak going for them after their demoralization by Duke in the Garden. That ended fast with a bad, bad loss to an 8-14 team in San Francisco. But the numbers put Gonzaga at 13, so they’re here.

14, Wisconsin (40)

The Badgers had a chance to take out Purdue on the road last week. Look for them to push Michigan State to the limit in the Kohl Center this Tuesday.

15. Ohio State (39)

Evan Turner is one of the five best players in college basketball. With him, this team can potentially make the Elite Eight.

16. Tennessee (39)

Tennessee has responded well to the dismissal of leading scorer Tyler Smith by handing Kansas its only loss, but recent losses to Georgia and Vanderbilt have not helped things.

17. Pittsburgh (30)

Pittsburgh should not be this high, as they lost to Seton Hall last week and South Florida this past week. But they certainly have surprised with their success after losing all 5 starters.

18. Mississippi (29)

Seems like no team ranked from 12-20 last week wants to win, Mississippi included. The Rebels dropped a home tilt to Arkansas after we made our poll. Safe to say, they’ll be close to dropping in this week’s poll.

19. Georgia Tech (26)

Georgia Tech thrashed Kentucky State (who?) in a game only played because Kentucky State’s coach is a former Yellow Jacket. Not exactly what you’d call a warm up for their biggest test of the year on Thursday.

20. Baylor (25)

Baylor had a strong week after taking down Texas in Arlington as well as taking Kansas State right down to the wire. The Big 12 has been much more than Kansas and Texas.

21. Temple (20)

Temple lost at Charlotte, not exactly a powerhouse. The loss muddles the Atlantic-10 picture, as Temple, Charlotte and last season’s winner Xavier are all tied at 6-1.

22. New Mexico (19)

New Mexico took care of business against BYU at home, handing the Cougars their first conference loss of the season. Apparently, “the Pit” is a tough place to play.

23. Vanderbilt (19)

Vanderbilt knocked off Tennessee on the road before giving Kentucky a good game over the weekend. They should be ranked higher than this.

24. Butler (14)

Butler continues to run right through the Horizon League. Anticipate an undefeated conference season from them, although they have yet to have a signature win.

25. Clemson (6)

Clemson rebounded from a tough loss at BC by defeating Maryland at home. Their win over UNC two weeks ago looks less and less impressive by the day. When you’re not the only team from South Carolina to have beaten the Tar Heels, that’s saying something.

Also receiving votes: Connecticut (5), Florida State (4), Mississippi State (4), Maryland (3), Northern Iowa (2), UTEP (2), Cornell (1), North Carolina (0)
